The Great
Yews are often known as keepers of time and portals to the spirit world. These evergreens are present all over Europe but in the UK, we have some of the best examples of these fascinating trees. They are often found in churchyards but they were also very important to the pagan religions before Christianity took root here. From central London, you head to Newlands corner near Guildford (off A3) to see rare ancient yew trees growing in Druidic groves. There are legends and stories to accompany these photogenic wonders of the natural world. Next you are off to The Tandridge Yew on the M25/A22 junction where a giant 2000 year old monumental yew resides next to a 1000 year old Saxon church.
The highlight of the tour is the Crowhurst Yew, a 3000 year old yew with a door in the trunk – finally we could end the tour at Wakehurst Place to see this National Trust property including their exceptional yews.
